National Down Syndrome Congress Conference Join us August 3-5, 2007 at the beautiful Westin Crown Center in Kansas City, Missouri as we celebrate life with Down Syndrome at the National Down Syndrome Congress (NDSC) Convention. For 35 year, the NDSC Convention has been a place to share, learn, recharge and renew- a place of belonging for self advocates and families. Attendees compare the convention to a giant family reunion where lives are touched, relationships made and renewed, and warmth infuses the gathering. Self-advocates are empowered. Siblings share honestly. Parents and professionals have an unparalleled opportunity to learn from renowned speakers and share with one another. Please visit http://www.ndsccenter.org/news/convention.php to learn more about presenters, download a registration brochure or to register online. Want to volunteer for this great event? Contact the Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City at 913-384-4848. Greetings from NICHCY, the National Dissemination Center for Children with Disabilities. You are receiving this letter because you signed up for our eNews service and indicated that you were interested in resources on important education and disability laws, learning disabilities, or the individualized education program (IEP). Here's the latest news: NICHCY has just posted three training modules online for the Building the Legacy training curriculum on IDEA 2004: -- Module 6, Early Intervening Services and Response to Intervention -- Module 11, Identification of Children with Specific Learning Disabilities -- Module 12, The IEP Team: Who is a Member? All three modules include a PowerPoint slide show to use in training sessions, detailed discussions of IDEA for trainers, and handouts for audience participants. The modules are available for download, use, and sharing at: http://www.nichcy.org/training/contents.asp In all, 19 modules on critical IDEA topics will be available by Summer 2007. We're working as fast as we can and will be sure to write you the moment that more modules are posted on our site. The next one up will be "Meetings of the IEP Team." We hope you'll find these training resources helpful in your work or personal life. As always, please feel free to call or email us with your disability-related concerns, or visit our Web site, at: www.nichcy.org. Missouri State Plan for Special Education Released The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has published the revised Missouri State Plan for Special Education. It can be viewed at http://dese.mo.gov/schoollaw/rulesregs/Inc_By_Ref_Mat/Special%20Education/IDEA%20Part%20B.html
Educational Surrogate Training The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education will be conducting an educational surrogate training for individuals willing to volunteer to serve as an educational surrogate for students with disabilities. The date and location of this training is as follows: Monday, May 7, 2007 Central R-III School District Central Administration Building 200 High Street Park Hills, MO 63601 To register, please contact Barb Bouchard at 573-431-2713 Now is the time to approach members of your community about attending this training to become an educational surrogate volunteer. Please distribute the flier located on our website at: http://dese.mo.gov/divspeced/Compliance/06_Flyer.pdf to all interested parties. The deadline for registration is May 1, 2007. The Division of Special Education reserves the right to cancel any training where there is insufficient registration. In February 2000, the Division of Special Education created the Special Education Listserve (SELS). It has been and continues to be a limited email group (with listserve being a misnomer since it really isn't a listserve) available to only one contact person per school district/responsible public agency. It is used by the Division to disseminate important special education information concerning funding, compliance, data collection, professional development, etc. The Division has now created a second email group called SELS2. This email group is open to anyone wanting to subscribe. It will allow subscribers to receive the EXACT same messages as subscribers to SELS. By creating this second email group, all constituents interested in special education will have the opportunity to receive the Division's email messages, not just one contact per school district/responsible public agency. It also allows DESE to maintain the ability to make sure that every district has at least one contact person per district receiving these messages. Messages are from DESE only and may only be posted by the manager (Lina Browner, Division of Special Education). Members may not post messages to either SELS or SELS2.We are asking districts and stakeholder groups to disseminate information about SELS2 to principals, teachers, parents, and any others who they feel may be interested in subscribing to SELS2. Those interested in subscribing to SELS2 can do so by going to the following website http://dese.mo.gov/divspeced/sels2_subscribe.html. Messages are also kept in an archive located at: http://dese.mo.gov/divspeced/Listserv_Archives.html click on the Archive button. If you have questions about either SELS or SELS2, contact Lina Browner, Executive Assistant for the Division at Lina.Browner@dese.mo.gov or at 573-751-5739.
